Our History

Our funeral home has a unique history and committed relationship working within the community. We invite you to explore our legacy.

In 1977, Karl and Marilyn Kurtz along with their two sons, Tom Vana and Joey Kurtz, moved into a farmhouse on the corner of Cedar and Francis Roads in New Lenox. On November 3rd of that year, Kurtz Memorial Chapel started serving the New Lenox community for their funeral needs. Just three weeks later Karl bought a 1972 maroon Cadillac ambulance and started Kurtz Ambulance Service

Karl and Marilyn's work ethic cannot be denied. Karl would start his day at sunrise by washing vehicles (always Marilyn's car first) and Marilyn would start her several hours of paperwork. Their work day was endless for years as they answered the ambulance phones and dispatched vehicles from their home 24 hours a day. Today Marilyn still is secretary and treasurer and continues to start her day's work at 4 a.m.

Founded in 1904, Goodale Memorial Chapel was purchased by the Kurtz Family. Since 1990, we have been proudly serving the Lockport area. In 2003, a third location was added to serve the community of Frankfort, Illinois, and surrounding areas.

In 1995 Karl Kurtz was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and just a few short years later became disabled from its progression. In 2016, Karl passed away from complications of his Parkinson's. His son, Tom Vana now serves as President and CEO of Kurtz Memorial Chapel.
