William F. Byrne Jr.

March 7, 1940 — April 27, 2026

Frankfort, IL

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a loving husband, devoted father, and extraordinary man whose quiet strength and steady presence shaped the lives of those fortunate enough to know him.

A proud graduate of Mt. Carmel High School and Christian man, he went on to build a life defined by hard work, skill, and dedication as an IBEW Local 134 electrician. His hands told the story of his life—capable, precise, and endlessly resourceful. A masterful mechanical genius, he had an innate ability to understand how things worked and, more importantly, how to make them work better. Whether on the job or in the basement, he approached every task with determination and pride.

He was a passionate hot rod enthusiast, finding joy in the hum of an engine and the craftsmanship behind every detail. He was a Midwest Go Cart Champion racing at Soldier Field, and went on to lining all the neighborhood kids for go-cart rides around the block. That same passion carried into all aspects of his life—he didn’t just do things, he mastered them.

His ingenuity extended beyond necessity and into creativity, often with a touch of humor. He dreamed up and built countless clever contraptions: a door lock disguised as a water spigot, a simple sheet of plastic that became his original version of the slip-n-slide, a homemade bug light intended to deter pests but that instead invited them in droves, and a portable table that hung around the neck—perfect for picnics and backyard gatherings. And more personally, being the Papa that created the Grand Park Tour, taking all the grandkids from park-to-park until they were finally dirty, exhausted, and filled with fun memories. Each invention reflected his sharp mind, playful spirit, and willingness to try anything once.

Though his circle wasn’t wide, the roots of his relationships ran deep. He valued loyalty, trust, and quiet connection over grand gestures or many words. His love was not always spoken, but it was always understood—and that was enough.

His wife, Mary Lou (nee Vickers), was his one and only sweetheart. Their bond was unwavering, built on a lifetime of shared moments, mutual understanding, and enduring devotion. Together, they created a home grounded in love, resilience, and respect.

As a father, he led by example—through hard work, integrity, and a steadfast presence that offered comfort without the need for words. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled and the lives he shaped.

If you were in his life, you were loved.

He will be deeply missed and forever fondly remembered.

Survived by his wife, Mary Lou Byrne (nee Vickers); his children Cindy Calombaris (Van), Colleen Mathey (Ed), Jim Byrne (Gloria), and Tim Byrne; his grandchildren Elizabeth Calombaris, Jorgi Calombaris, Nick Calombaris, Patrick Mathey, Mickey Mathey, Juliet Mathey, Joe Byrne, and John Byrne; and brother Dave Byrne (Roseanne).

Family will receive friends Monday, May 4th, 2026 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 7659 W. Sauk Trail, Frankfort, IL 60423 from 10:00 AM until time of the funeral mass at 11:00 AM.
