Mokena, IL

Steven R. Wright, age 74, of Mokena, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 10th, 2026.

A self-made entrepreneur, Steve founded Wright Excavating in 1979, successfully building and operating multiple businesses throughout his life. Yet as much as he accomplished in his career, Steve was truly defined by his boundless curiosity, his deep sense of wonder, and a steadfast commitment to living life entirely on his own terms.

From a young age, Steve held a deep appreciation for traditional and antique farming, establishing his own farm complete with draft horses and cows. Above all his mechanical interests, he possessed a lifelong passion for steam power. A craftsman at heart, Steve built his own functional steam train, operated and gave rides in a steam car, captained a steam boat, and took immense pride in keeping the history of steam traction engines alive for future generations. These unique pursuits forged deep, lasting friendships across the Amish, railroad, steam car, and threshermen communities. Behind his extraordinary drive was a quiet, profoundly generous spirit. Guided by a simple desire to help those in need, Steve frequently supported local homeless shelters, often personally cooking, preparing, and delivering meals. Above all else, he was a devoted father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family and gift his children a uniquely memorable, adventure-filled childhood.

Steve was an avid music lover as he cherished attending "oldies" concerts with his family. In his later years, he developed a deep appreciation for band organ music, which complemented his lifelong affection for vintage carousels. He held a special love for the ocean, finding some of his greatest peace and joy in the Bahamas.

Steve is survived by his former wife of 30 years, Mary Wright; his son, Brian (Megan) Wright; his daughter, Anne (Adam) Dorociak; and his six beloved grandchildren: Carter, Violet, Grant, Emma, Charlotte, and Nora. He will be remembered as a one-of-a-kind man who built a life that was distinctly his own—leaving behind an enduring legacy of adventure, curiosity, and impactful kindness.
