Rita Kay Filip was born on July 27, 1970, in LaSalle, Illinois, to her loving parents Allen and Jean Scherer. She was a beacon of light with her beautiful smile that touched the hearts of all who knew her. Rita passed away on June 19, 2024 with her family by her side at Silver Cross Hospital after a hard battle with cancer.
Throughout her life, Rita brought joy and warmth to those around her. She will be missed deeply by her husband of 32 years, Rodney Filip, her son John Filip, her daughter Jeana (Mike) DeYoung, and her grandson Travis DeYoung. Rita's love and care extended beyond her immediate family to include her siblings Ralph (Rhonda) Scherer, Becki Gelin, Marcia (Kurt) Longino, Thomas Scherer, and she held a special place in the hearts of many nieces and nephews whom she cherished dearly.
Rita was happiest sitting on a Gulf Shores beach, drinking a Captain and diet with her husband, spending time at the lake with her kids, or listening to all her favorite songs (and there were a lot!). Her favorite role was becoming Gammy to her grandson, who adored her more than anyone. We see Rita through his big, bright smile that she brings out in him. She loved her crazy beagle, Captain, who we know was there to greet her as she entered heaven.
Rita's presence brightened every room she entered, and her memory will continue to do so for all who had the privilege of knowing her. In addition to being a devoted family member, she was a true friend to many.
“God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.”
