Richard "Rick" John DeFries

February 28, 1952 — December 1, 2025

It is with deep love and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Richard “Rick” J. DeFries, a kind, funny and caring man who devoted his life to his family and to the simple joys that made him who he was. Rick left this world on December 1st, 2025, surrounded by those who loved him most.

Born with a warm heart and gentle spirit, Rick had a gift for making people feel at ease. His humor -sometimes subtle, sometimes playful- brought light to even the hardest days. He approached life with quiet generosity, steady devotion, and a deep sense of responsibility toward those he loved.

Rick found peace and pride in the outdoors. Whether tending to his yard, nurturing his garden, detailing his vehicles or enjoying a round of golf, he appreciated the beauty of simple moments. He was an avid Bears fan. Never a fairweather fan, some days he would say he'd rather watch paint dry when

they were losing, but he tuned in every weekend. These hobbies were more than pastimes- they were reflections of his character: patient, loyal, thoughtful and always rooted in gratitude.

Above all, Rick was a devoted husband, father and family man. He gave his time, his wisdom and his heart without hesitation. His presence was a source of comfort, his guidance a steady anchor, and his love a constant that shaped the lives of everyone around him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanne; his children, Jennifer (Jeff) Blankenship, Richard Jr (Valerie), Christopher, Crystal, Matthew (Nicole), Anna (Andre) Barron, Rose (Dave) Luttrell, Patrick Murphy and Schelly Murphy; and his beloved grandchildren, Hayley, Carly, Chloe, Dominic, Zoe, Griffin, Rhys, Andy, Olivia and Ruby, who will forever cherish his laughter, his kindness, and the countless memories that now serve as a treasured reminders of the wonderful man he was.

Rick will be missed beyond measure, but the love and light he brought into the world will continue to live on in those who had the privilege of knowing him. His presence lives in the hearts of those who loved him. Memorial contributions to St. Anthony Church would be appreciated.
