Age 70 of Elwood, IL passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, August 09, 2023. Phil was born in Dixon, IL to the late Roger and Mary Margaret (nee Morrissey) Bauer. Beloved husband of Gail (nee Garrett) Bauer of 49 years; loving father of Eric (Heather) Bauer, Kyle (Jennifer) Bauer, and Laura (Justin) Walsh; cherished Papa of Rylee and Claire Bauer, Avery and Sean Bauer, and Maureen and Mae Walsh; dear brother of Lynn (Bob) Sutton, Connie (Jim) Sutton, Jeff Bauer, Janet (Bob) Griffiths, and the late Christine Bauer: loved uncle, cousin, and friend of many. Phil started out working at Zisner Backstrom delivering auto parts. He then worked at Jim’s Auto and finally became the owner, for 40 years, of Auto Parts Center in Joliet, IL, ending his career with Carquest. Phil was graduate of Providence Catholic High School, Class of 1971, where he played basketball, and still got together with many friends from high school. He enjoyed coaching basketball and baseball and loved to teach the skills to all the kids. He was also past President of St. Joseph, Manhattan Athletic Association. His “favorite” job was being Papa! He loved to play card games, watch baseball games, band concerts, and horse shows. If the kids had an event, Phil was there. Phil always put everyone else first. He was a great husband, father, and friend. As he always said, “I have a wonderful life”. He will be truly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Phil’s name to Providence Catholic High School or St. Joseph Grade School would be appreciated. The family will receive friends at Kurtz Memorial Chapel 102 E. Francis Rd. New Lenox, IL on Sunday, August 13, 2023, from 2pm – 5pm. Everyone will meet at St. Joseph Catholic Church 235 W. North St, Manhattan, IL on Monday, August 14, 2023, for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am. Interment Guardian Angels Cemetery, Manhattan, IL.
