Matt passed away Monday, June 23, 2025 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Matt was 71 years old. He lived in Mokena.

Matt was born on March 4, 1954 at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Evergreen Park, IL. He was raised in Posen, Illinois where he met his soulmate and wife, Sue (Trella). Matt & Sue were teenage sweethearts and would have been married 49 years on August 7th! Their daughter Jennifer (Spano) was truly “daddy’s girl“! Her husband Nick (Spano) was more like a son to Matt instead of a son-in-law, but his two grandchildren Harper and Jackson Spano were truly the light of grandpa’s life!

Matt is also survived by his sister Frances Gorga and brother Pat, his sister-in-law Patty (Trella) Kearnes, brother-in-law Garry Kearnes, and sister-in-law Laura Trella-Owak, and many nieces & nephews and special friends. Matt was preceded in death by his parents Matthew & Theresa Gorga (Fierro), siblings Ed Szudy, Cathy Richter and brother-in-law Tony Trella.

It was growing up in the 60’s and 70’s in Posen where he also made many life long friendships that he treasured. He loved hanging out with “the guys”, playing softball and most of all cruising around in his ‘66 Chevelle. But it was his ‘66 Nova SS that was his absolute favorite (and boy did he ever regret selling that car!) His good friend Dave said Matt taught them all how to be “Cool”!!!

Matt worked as a skilled laborer at Archon Construction Company and was a member of the Laborers’ Union Local 5 for over 35 years.

He truly was a “Jack of all trades” and a master of most!! Matt was artistic and could figure out how to build most anything. Many of his accomplishments were amazing. He would help anyone with any project, big or small and would give you the shirt off his back, and that included giving his lunch to a homeless guy while he was working in Chicago!

Matt loved nature, working outside, and just sitting relaxing by the lake at a friend’s cottage in Michigan. And each morning while sitting at the kitchen table he was excited to see the Cardinal who visited our yard every single day!

The family will be receive relatives and friends Tuesday, July 1st at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, 65 Old Frankfort Way, Frankfort, IL 60423 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment, Good Shepherd Catholic Cemetery, Orland Park, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
