Lola Coleman (née Lane), of Frankfort, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family, on Thursday, December 29, 2022, after a courageous cancer battle. A lifelong resident of Frankfort, IL, Lola was born on June 5, 1946 and graduated in 1964 from Lincoln Way High School. One of seven children, she was a beloved daughter of Bettie and the late Walter Lane. She is preceded in death by her father, Walter Lane; her brother, Larry Lane; her sister, Mary Van de Voorde; her sister Barb Crutchfield; and her daughter in law, Jody Coleman.
Lola is survived by her cherished husband of 57 years, Virgil, and many relatives and dear friends. Her surviving family includes her mother, Bettie Lane; three sons, Andy Coleman, Don Coleman, and Jim Coleman; daughters in law, Amie Coleman and Karen Coleman; her grandchildren, Dominique Hute (née Coleman) and Arley Coleman; granddaughter in law, Melanie Hute; and her siblings, Tom Lane, Rosie Smock, and Carol Burkhart; and many nieces and nephews.
Lola worked at many iconic Frankfort mainstays, including the A & W Drive In, The Ritz, The Grainery, The General Store, Ann’s Hallmark, and Lincoln Way East High School. She made an impact in each of these places, with her incredible thoughtfulness and work ethic.
While she loved and reminisced fondly about each of these stages in her career and the friendships she formed along the way, Lola would say without reservation that her greatest pride was in her family and the love of her life, Virgil. Whether watching the hummingbirds at their butterfly bushes, growing vegetables in their garden, gathering with friends and neighbors on their lawn for the annual Fall Fest Parade, or, most often, sitting on their porch together, Lola and Virgil were always by each other’s side.
For over 50 years Lola was part of a treasured Girls Club, comprised of her dearest girlfriends from Lincoln Way High School, gathering monthly for both celebration and sorrow. These lifelong friendships were precious to her, and they sustained her throughout her life.
A small family gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.
Interment will be private at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood IL.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Frankfort Lion’s Club would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements by Kurtz Memorial Chapel, Frankfort IL www.kurtzmemorialchapel.com or 815-806-2225.
