James "Austin" Burke, a cherished member of his community and a devoted family man, passed away on his 69th wedding anniversary, September 22, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on April 20, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, Austin lived a life full of laughter, dedication, and love.
Austin proudly served as a member of the IBEW Local 134 union and was also a Marine veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. His commitment to his work and his country exemplified his character, as did his quick wit and sense of humor that endeared him to many.
A graduate of Leo Catholic High School in 1948, Austin developed a passion for sports that remained throughout his life. He loved watching The Chicago White Sox and Notre Dame sports, sharing his enthusiasm with family and friends. Furthermore, he was an active participant in the SAC "Social Athletic Club," affectionately known as "The Boneheads", where he found joy and camaraderie among fellow members who were truly his family.
Austin leaves behind his beloved wife of 69 years, Eileen (nee Joyce); his children, Colleen (David) Zenere, Jim (Mary) Burke, Erin (Bruce) Deady, and Maureen (Shaun) Buss; and his cherished grandchildren: Kara, Kelly, Austin, Sarah, Michael, Myles, Norah, as well as his great-grandsons, William and James Terek; fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. These family ties along with his Irish heritage were a source of immeasurable pride and happiness for him.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Austin James and Marie Burke, who provided the foundation for the warmth and generosity that characterized his life.
Austin’s impact will be felt for years to come as he is remembered for the joy he brought to those around him. A visitation will be held on September 29, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church, located at 19515 115th Ave, Mokena, IL. The interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip at 12:45 PM.
