Howard F. Spurlin

Howard Spurlin, age 80, of Mokena, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on Chicago’s south side in 1944, Howard built a life grounded in hard work, steadfast strength, and a dry wit that often-caught people by surprise. He spent his career dedicated to the railroad industry, beginning as a switchman for the Illinois Central Railroad and later serving as a conductor for Metra, Chicago’s electric commuter rail line. Howard’s deep understanding of the rails was matched by his craftsmanship off the clock—he was a master of carpentry, known for building everything from furniture to entire homes with precision, patience, and pride.

Howard is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Patricia; his three daughters; five beloved grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and his twin sisters. He was a steady, generous presence in the lives of those who knew him, always ready with a funny story, helping hand, or a new project in his workshop.

In his free time, Howard found joy in simple pleasures. He was an avid fisherman and golfer, and his green thumb kept his garden blooming from spring through fall—most proudly, with over 50 varieties of his beloved daylilies. As a longtime member of the Chicago Lionel Train Club, he could spend hours immersed in his model railroading hobby, recreating the world he knew best in miniature detail.

Howard’s legacy is one of hard work, craftsmanship, and devotion to family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
