Barbara Jean Gergely

Barbara Gergely (nee Mahlandt), age 81 of New Lenox, IL formerly of Carlyle, IL and Riverdale, IL passed away Thursday June 6, 2024, at Beecher Manor Nursing and Rehab Center, Beecher, IL.  

Beloved wife of the late Joseph A. Gergely; loving mother of Delon (Keith) Schuldt and Joseph (Lynn) Gergely; cherished grandmother of Joseph Gergely and Tiffani Gergely; dear sister of Becky (Bill) Hughes, the late Jim (Helen) Mahlandt, the late Kay (Doug) Brown, and the late Linda Mahlandt; daughter of the late Elmer and Gladys (nee Jones) Mahlandt; loved sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, and friend of many.  

Barb was born in Carlyle and moved to Riverdale in 1962 where she worked as a beautician.  After her first “date” with Joe, she went home and told family and friends “I am going to marry that man!” and so began their truly wonderful life together.  They married in 1966.  Barb focused on her family and was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren.   Barb and Joe loved to go out dancing whenever they could.  They brought home several trophies from dance competitions.  Known for her compassion, she had a way of endearing herself to people where she brought comfort and joy to so many as an incredible friend, counselor and confidant.  She loved to laugh, attend parties, sing, dance and cook.  She truly taught us to love and enjoy life.  Barb and Joe are together again singing, laughing and dancing in heaven.   She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Barb will be laid to rest alongside her husband at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL in private services.
