ROBERT D. HUGHES

Age 82, of New Lenox, passed away Thursday, November 8th, 2018 at his home in New Lenox.

Bob is survived by his loving family, wife, Donna Hughes (Cassidy), children, Nancy (Robert) LeGrand, Tammy (Steven) Roeder, daughter-in-law, Gayle Hughes, grandchildren, Brendon (Ivory) LeGrand, Nathaniel Roeder, London (Kris) Mertl, Danielle (Francis) Costanzo, Ethan Roeder, Brad Hughes, Kelly Hughes, great grandchildren, Kaden LeGrand and Ainsley Arends. Robert was one of six children.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John & Margaret Hughes (O’Donohue) and beloved son David Hughes.

Bob was devoted to Donna, his loving wife of 64 years. His high school sweetheart, Bob made a point of leaving “Love Is” cartoons for her to find. Both loved spending time together, and taking long driving trips, often to visit family and friends out of state. Their romance never ended.

Bob loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He faithfully attended athletic events, recitals and the like when his grandchildren were younger—and actively encouraged them to produce more family members as they grew older. When he received his diagnosis, he said it couldn't be right because there are great-grandbabies that he needed to see.

A sheet metal worker by trade - he just received his 60 year pin - Bob was a master wood worker. He enjoyed adorning each and every room with crown moulding and other intricate trimwork. He would surprise with hand-made gifts. Those lucky enough to receive his violin-shaped stools treasure them.

Bob enjoyed cooking for his extended family. He was a fine baker, always producing cakes for family events. A traditionalist, his pineapple upside down cakes were always baked in a cast iron skillet he used for decades.

Bob took great pride in his home and yard. Bob’s spotless garage was the only one in the neighborhood with oil paintings on the wall. When the weather cooperated, Bob held court there with friends who would stop by, sit on the swing or chairs he set up there for that purpose and just chat. Neighbors remarked that Bob’s garden, flowers and lawn were always meticulous. Christmas decorations were a specialty. The real mystery was how he was able to continue to remain so active and humble. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
