ROBERT BRUCE WHYTE
Lockport, IL
Robert "Bob, Whizzer, Boo, Schnozz, Pops, Gramps, Boppa" Whyte, age 86, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, IL after a recent illness. He was a loving husband to Beverly (Pace) Whyte; cherished father of Kim McGrath and David (Kelly) Whyte; and devoted grandfather to Kelsey McGrath, and Ethan and Jacob Whyte. Bob was born September 5, 1930 in Joliet, IL to John and Velma Whyte, and brother to John and George. Along with his father and brothers, he achieved the designation of Eagle Scout.
He graduated from Joliet Central High School in 1948 and Joliet Junior College in 1950, where his love of basketball was developed on the court. Bob worked for ComEd for 39 years as a Lineman, Crew Leader, Trouble Man, and Dispatcher. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. Bob accepted the Lord as his savior at a Billy Graham Crusade at Soldier Field when he was a teenager and was baptized at Ridgewood Baptist Church, where he became a member and joined the Hi-C Club. He was a Charter Member of Larkin Baptist Church, where he was an Awana Leader, Youth Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader, Choir Member, and Trustee. Recently, he attended Ashburn Baptist Church in Orland Park. Bob loved to play and watch sports of all kinds. His favorite teams were the Bulls, Sox and the Bears. In recent years, he enjoyed attending musical and athletic events featuring his grandchildren. He loved desserts, especially butterscotch pie, cookies, and his evening bowl of ice cream. Bob was known to many for being a dog magnet, for his daily weather reports and gas price updates, family vacations in Indian Rocks Beach at "Ray's Place", and traveling with Bev to many destinations in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as trips to Canada, England, Scotland, Paris, and cruises to the Caribbean, European Rivers, and the Panama Canal; and was well known for always being ready with a Ricola Cough Drop for anyone who needed it.
Bob is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sister-in-law, Barb Whyte and brother-in-law, LeRoy Pace; nieces and nephews, Janet Park, Dick Whyte, Nanette Picchietti, Vicky Dowland, and John Whyte; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sister-in-law Lois Whyte, and niece Barb McPhail.
