Mary Ellen McCabe
Age 94 of Orland Park since 2009, formerly of Flossmoor, passed away peacefully May 3, 2021 at Smith Crossing, a senior living community. Beloved wife of the late George Carlin McCabe, wedded 65 years. Born Mary Ellen Mannefeld in West Point, Nebraska, she was a loving mother to Jane (Jim) Dugan, Anne (the late Bill) Pierce, Tim (Meg) McCabe, the late Martin (Nori) McCabe, Bill (Mary Jo) McCabe and Tom (Dianna) McCabe. Adored grandmother to 13 and great grandmother to 7. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She graduated from The College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota and was a devoted alum and board member, serving as National President of the Alumnae Association. In 1990 her work and dedication were recognized by receiving the high honor of The Achievement Award by the college.

Upon graduation, she moved to Chicago and enjoyed a career in personnel. Her proudest work came as a volunteer in establishing an organization named Respond Now in Chicago Heights in 1969. Her charity work and leadership spanned decades and she was proud of its fifty-year history.

In her own words, however, her greatest achievements centered on building a family and a home full of faith. She was a fixture at her parish, Infant Jesus of Prague, its school, its school board and parish council all while raising six children and supporting her husband’s business pursuits.

After many years in Flossmoor, Mary Ellen and George moved to Smith Crossing in 2009 which brought them years of comfort and friendships.

A private family Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mokena will be held with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Alsip, IL.
