Obituary

Richard W. Olson Sr., 75, of South Holland, Illinois, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late Robert and Rosemary (Wheeler) Olson.

Rick leaves behind his devoted guide dog, Teal; his beloved son, Ricky (Arien) Olson Jr., with whom he shared a close and loving bond; his beloved fiancée, Colleen Schickel; his son-in-law, Ray Montes; and his best buddy, Ryan Howard. He was reunited in passing with his beloved daughter, Jacqueline Olson, and her daughter, his granddaughter Kaitlyn Moak. A proud and loving grandfather, Rick treasured Colin Olson, Haley Olson, and the twins Luke and Avery Montes. He was the dear brother of the late Robert Olson and his late twin sister, Patricia Barci and her husband the late Emil Barci Sr.; cherished uncle to Emil (Sabrina) Barci Jr.; and a beloved cousin, grandfather, uncle, and friend whose warmth and kindness will be remembered by all who knew him.

Rick was a proud U.S. Army veteran and retired Local No. 9 lineman. Although he lost his sight more than 22 years ago and retired early, he never let it hold him back. A member of the Blinded Veterans Association, he recently received his third service dog. He became active with the VA, attended an annual disabled veteran’s golf outing, explored the latest assistive technology, traveled, joined a scuba diving club, went rock climbing, and enjoyed hiking and fishing. Nothing stopped him. Most of all, he treasured sharing stories and spending time with family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends at Kurtz Memorial Chapel on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. until the service begins at 6:00 p.m.
